Old Volunteer

This is a magnificent building and thriving pub showcasing karaoke led by flamboyant hosts (men dressed in drag) when we arrived on Spring Bank Hol Monday 2013, only to hear that the pub was closing and the landlady was leaving. Sad. Featuring a stage for live bands. The pub was packed when we arrived. No real ale.

Gedling Inn

This is a large, eating pub. Now a Flaming Grill pub but serving decent Harvest Pale. Strong smell of steak throughout! Pool table. Large, chain pub.

And in 2008 as the Chesterfield Arms....

Blacks Head

A decent real ale pub in Carlton. Doom Bar was great. Smart inside. A drinkers' pub. The best this side of town so far.

Nags Head

This is a thriving old pub in Carlton. "Sticky 13s" seems to attract the crowds at lots of pubs. This included. Directors on draught but didn't see it till we'd ordered Fosters. Pool table. Snugs and a bouncy castle in the car park.

Earl of Chesterfield

A large old Home Brewery pub that has a pool table, Theakston's Best Bitter (not on when we went) and large rooms. One regular knew of Hunt's Bakery as he lived next to it since the 50's. Decent old pub with loyal regulars. Not hugely busy but doing OK by the looks of it.

Organ Grinder

Quite unique as the last remaining pub on a stretch of Nottingham that was once home to around 10 pubs. Alfreton Road was once a quality and well known pub crawl into town. Many people didn't make it that far!
The Blue Monkey Brewery now run this pub and the focus is on real ale. The Bateman's XB was fantastic.

Quiz night...

Caunton Beck

And while we were in Caunton, we found the pub we went for. Caunton Beck. An historic village pub with beamed ceilings, apparently excellent food and quality ale. The JHB was spot on.

The Plough

Slightly off my normal beaten track. We took a Sunday evening trip up to Caunton near Newark and found this little gem. Quiet, welcoming and fantastic Marston's EPA. A favourite.

Travellers Rest

To finish the trip from Caunton off we had one last drink in an old favourite. Along with something else this pub does well, food. Decent Directors here.

Duke of Cambridge

Another very local pub to me that I have never been to. Until now. Considered that it would be a characterless "John Smiths and Fosters" pub. Quite wrong! Again!
The Harvest Pale was great and just one of several (three, I think) real ales on.
It helped that it was hot and sunny so we could sit in the beer garden. Large car park at the back with a strange "fire escape" style staircase to enter the pub. Well worth a visit and I shall be back.

The Sycamore

An estate pub with a large car park. One of the few pubs left in St. Ann's. This pub was named after the original pub of the same name, pulled down in the 1970's.
Quiet when we went, Sunday lunchtime. There was a car wash in the car park but the dance floor and DJ booth, along with strict rules on dress-code (no hoodies or caps) suggested this pub was successful where many others have failed around St. Ann's. A family arrived for a Christening celebration while we were there. No real ale.

Update 2nd March 2019, closed, demolished and replaced:

Friday 17 May 2013

Robin Hood

Recently taken over by new management so we thought we'd go and revisit an old classic. Still thriving. We were made welcome by the new landlord. Banks's bitter was very good.

Monday 13 May 2013

Nag's Head

What an eye opener! A thriving and very lively pub at Bobber's Mill bridge. Karaoke. Loud music. And a decent pint of Theakston's Old Peculiar.

Moulder's Arms

An estate pub at the heart of the Alfreton Road community. One of the last pubs standing in this area. And due to close in the coming weeks to become a nursery! Neil the landlord made us welcome as did the regulars. Another sad loss.

Update Nov 2013: Now appears to have closed, as promised.

Colonel Burnaby

An historic Nottingham pub. Claire the landlady made us very welcome. She's been there for 16 years. The locals were a laugh. Apparently busy at weekends with bands playing. Pool table. Mainly lager.

The Plough

The brewery tap of the Nottingham Brewery. A classic unspoiled pub with a lounge and bar. A piano you could imagine Uncle Albert playing, board games, books and great beer! The Robin Hood ale was great. Quite a busy little pub.

Lincolnshire Poacher

This classic Nottingham pub is famous for its range of Whisky and Real Ale. Formerly the Old Grey Nags Head it sits opposite the Nags Head and has been expanded into next door. Owned and run by Castle Rock. Ale is awesome. It is a thriving pub still featuring snugs and a beer garden.

Tuesday 7 May 2013

Catchems Corner

A pub with a great history as the former railway station. Unspoiled inside, original features such as the fireplace. A beer garden. Made very welcome and even discovered a great new book on Nottinghamshire pubs! Met a chap called Bat who said there was a thriving pool and darts team. Busy pub at weekends. Will be back! But no real ale.

Old Pear Tree

A classic 'heritage' pub. White stone walled. Small bar in main entrance hallway and several snugs. No real ale but a very busy, thriving little pub with plenty of regulars. A favourite for atmosphere and history.
